Jet Pump

Jet PumpJet pumps are used to drawing water up from a well. It is a type of impeller-diffuser pump that is used to draw water from wells into residences. The pump can be used both for shallow well as well as deep well configurations.

How does a Jet Pump works?
Jet pumps create suction in way which is rather novel. The pump is activated by an electric motor that drives an impeller or centrifugal pump. The impeller moves water (drive water) from the well through a narrow orifice or jet mounted in the housing in front of the impeller. As the water leaves the jet, a partial vacuum is created that sucks additional water from the well. Directly behind the jet is a venturi tube that increases in diameter. Its function is slow down the water. It also increases the pressure. The pumped water-new water that is drawn from the well by the suction at the jet then combines with the drive water to discharge into the plumbing system at high pressure.

Types of Jet Pumps:

  • Deep well jet pump : Deep well jet pumps are used in high volume applications, such as oil wells ranging from 800 to 15,000 feet in depth.

  • Shallow well jet pump : Shallow well jet pumps are used in applications where the media is close to the surface, such as in residential wells.

  • Convertible jet pump : Convertible jet pumps can be used for either deep or shallow well applications.

  • Mini jet pump : Mini jet pumps are used for smaller applications, such as aquariums.
Uses and Features of Jet Pumps:

  • The jet pumps may be used on shallow or deep well applications in homes, farms, cottages or as booster services.

  • Jet pumps handle all forms of motive fluid including gas, steam, or liquid.

  • They can be mounted both vertically and horizontally into the process media.

  • Jet pumps are used in applications where the material that is pumped out helps in the creating the motive force needed to move through the pump. For example: in marine applications, jet pumps are used to transfer seawater.

  • Jet pumps are also considered as mixers or circulators since the intake combines fluids.

  • In domestic applications, jet pumps are used to move wastewater up to the sewer line and are also referred to as ejector pumps.

  • Jet pumps are however not as efficient as hydraulic pumps due to such factors as friction loss, but can be more efficient when working with combined media that includes gases and variable well conditions where the surface characteristics include turbulence.

  • Many jet pumps are self-priming. They are constructed in such a way so that they can create and maintain a sufficient vacuum level to draw fluid into the inlets with no external assistance.
