Fuel Pump

Fuel PumpAn important part of a motor vehicle is a fuel pump. It is an essential component of a car or other internal combustion engined device without which an engine or a car cannot run. In new cars, the fuel pump is usually installed in the fuel tank. In older cars, the fuel pump is attached to the engine or on the frame rail between the tank and the engine. If the pump is in the tank or on the frame rail then it is electric and is run by the car's battery. Fuel pumps mounted to the engine use the motion of the engine to pump the fuel.

How does a fuel pump works?
Fuel flows to the engine from the fuel tank. This is then sent to the fuel injection system under high pressure or to the carburetor with low pressure. For this reason, some fuel injected engines have two fuel pumps: one pump for high volume and low pressure volume supply in the tank and the other pump for low volume and high pressure on or close to the engine.

Classifications of Fuel Pump:
Based on its applications, fuel pumps are classified into the following:
  • Diesel fuel pump : This is a mechanical or electrical device that pumps fuel from the fuel tank and releases it to the injector pump.

  • Diesel fuel transfer pump : This is a mechanical device that pumps diesel from the fuel tank and releases it to the carburetor.

  • Fuel transfer pump : This pumps fuel from the fuel tank and releases it to the carburetor and is mechanical.

  • Fuel injection pump : This pulls the fuel and releases under high pressure to the injector. The injector in a gasoline engine releases the fuel directly into the cylinder.

  • Fuel oil transfer pump : This pump offers an economic and quick fuel pumping solution. This supplies diesel fuel for boilers.

  • High pressure fuel pump : This pump is used to transfer fuel to the device at high pressure.

Types of Fuel Pumps:
  • Mechanical Fuel Pump
  • Electrical Fuel Pump
Applications of Fuel Pump:
Fuel pump is used in a variety of applications like:
  • Transferring Diesel Fuel
  • Transferring Gasoline
  • Transferring Kerosene
  • Transferring Mineral Spirits
  • Stoddard Solvents and Heptane
  • Power Plants or Sectors
Features of Fuel Pump:
  • A fuel pump requires less maintenance.
  • Flow rates are interchangeable in fuel pumps.
  • Inverter usage is normal.
  • There is no degradation in the flow.
  • Fuel pump is made of hard metal.
